Conjoined (Siamese) Twins – A Happy Break Up Story
Safaa (Safa) and Chifaa (Şifa) were 5-month-old Siamese twins when they were brought to the Hospital in Turkey .They were born facing each other; they were joined from the anterior chest wall to their abdomen!
- Their cardiac membrane and livers were attached to eachother and they were born with deficient chest bones and ribs. Rare type; Thoracopagus.
- 6 months to prepare for the operation
- An army of 30-doctors&nurses&technicians completed the operation in 9 hours.
- One of the twin had Hydrocephalus. Firstly , shunt surgery was performed.
- Plastic surgeons operated twins for expanding tissue and skin for the conjoined area.
- The conjoined twins were successfully separated from each other
- After the operation, the twins, who received treatment in the hospital for 4 more months, were discharged with their own bodies and health.
Ozaki Procedure
Modern bioprostheses offer a complete and definitive solution to elderly patients who need aortic valve surgery. Nonetheless, the scenario is more demanding when dealing with younger and less fragile patients. The answer to the needs of this special population is the enhancement and refinement of the surgical technique.
The Ozaki technique for aortic valve reconstruction is based on the independent replacement of the three aortic valve cusps with tailored autologous pericardial neocusps. The preparation and the tailoring of the patient’s pericardium is therefore one of the cornerstones of this procedure. This approach requires expert hands, appropriate training, and optimization of the surgical technique.
